Leadership in the Real World

When pressure rises, leadership reveals your natural tendencies. In the moment, most of us move quickly, solve the issue, and keep things going. That instinct isn’t wrong, but it’s incomplete. The leaders who consistently get better results learn to pause, even briefly, and choose a more intentional response.

Reaction = fast, automatic, keeps things moving
Intention = deliberate, thoughtful, shapes better outcomes

You don’t always control the situation, but you always influence how you respond.

  • Most leadership shows up in small, everyday decisions. These are the quiet tradeoffs that shape your team over time:

    • Speed vs. clarity

    • Control vs. trust

    • Fixing vs. developing

Ask yourself: “What would the best version of me do here?”

  • Transactional leadership focuses on solving the issue and moving on. Transformational leadership improves how the work gets done by shaping how people think, respond, and grow.

    • Transactional: task-focused, efficient, short-term

    • Transformational: people-focused, developmental, long-term

Put It Into Practice

Here are a few simple ways to apply this with your team right away:

  • Pause before responding
Even a 5-second pause can change your tone, your words, and the outcome

  • Ask instead of tell
“What do you think we should do here?” builds ownership and thinking

  • Call out the “why”
Help your team understand the reason behind decisions – not just the task

  • Use real moments as coaching moments
Instead of fixing everything yourself, turn situations into quick development opportunities

  • Reflect at the end of the day
Ask yourself: Where did I react? Where was I intentional?
